Charges upheld against pastor

A judge Tuesday refused to dismiss a charge alleging that the pastor of a Rochester church had sexual contact with a boy. Monroe County Court Judge James J. Piampiano ruled that a grand jury heard sufficient evidence to charge Bishop Joe N. Flowers Jr. with a felony of second-degree course of sexual conduct against a child for acts with a boy younger than 13. The acts allegedly occurred from Jan. 1, 2007, to March 31, 2010.

Flowers, 41, of Henrietta, is pastor of Walk of Life Christian Center Inc. He has pleaded not guilty and his trial is scheduled to begin June 6. If convicted, Flowers faces up to seven years in prison.

Dr. John M. Bennett, an international expert in leukemia, has received an award from the American Society of Clinical Oncologists for leadership or outstanding scientific work in geriatric oncology.

Bennett of the University of Rochester Medical Center, was named the 2011 recipient of the B.J. Kennedy Award and Lecture for Scientific Excellence in Geriatric Oncology.

Bennett is professor emeritus of oncology in medicine, laboratory medicine and pathology at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at URMC.

Child abuse forum Saturday

The abuse of children that goes on in homes, often accepted as stern parenting, has a direct connection to the violence that takes place on the streets of Rochester, officials said at a press conference Tuesday, where they announced a seminar on the prevention of physical and mental abuse of children.

The seminar is sponsored by the Rochester Area Child Abuse Network. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Aenon Missionary Baptist Church, 175 Genesee St.
