The High Court has cleared the way for most of the report into allegations of clerical sexual abuse in the Cloyne Diocese to be published.

President Nicholas Kearns has blocked the release of parts of Chapter 9 which relate to a priest who is due to stand trial shortly.

The commission of investigation was set up to look into how the Church and State handled allegations of clerical sexual abuse in the Cloyne diocese between 1996 and 2009.

There are 26 chapters in the report dealing with 19 clerics.

Today, following a private application by the Justice Minister Alan Shatter, the President of the High Court has directed that the report can be published as long as it omits any reference to a priest who is due to stand trial shortly.

Nicholas Kearns said it was not his intention to repress anything but there is a risk that publication of parts of Chapter 9 might prejudice or derail the trial.

The decision will be reviewed in July.

The Department of Justice has this afternoon said it is not yet in a position to say when the rest of the report will be published.
