The trial of a former Kingsport priest facing rape and sexual misconduct charges in Sullivan County court has been postponed to July 11.

William "Bill" Casey, 76, 740 Shakerag Road, Greeneville, was scheduled for trial on first-degree sexual misconduct and two counts of aggravated rape in Sullivan County Criminal Court on Monday.

Judge Robert Montgomery said Monday morning that he agreed to a continuance after a conference call Sunday with the prosecution and defense.

The conference call concerned additional discovery materials the prosecution had recently received from another jurisdiction, including "a pretty extensive interview" with the alleged victim," Montgomery said.

The length and content of it "created a situation where the defense and/or state needs to analyze it further with regard to the offenses and circumstances in this case," he said.

Casey's charges stem from his alleged abuse of a young boy shortly becoming priest of St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Kingsport in the 1970s.

At a prior hearing, the alleged victim, Warren Tucker, 45, testified that he was an altar boy at St. Dominic's when the abuse began. His mother was involved in a relationship with Casey at the time, he said.

Casey has already pleaded guilty to similar offenses committed against Tucker in McDowell County, N.C., and he has additional charges pending in Scott County, Va.

By the time Tucker reported his allegations to authorities, Casey had retired from the Notre Dame Parish in Greeneville. He was subsequently suspended from the Catholic ministry pending completion of the laicization process.

A motions hearing is scheduled for June 10.
