SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Before Sunday morning mass at Saint Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Scottsdale, parishioners got an additional sermon of sorts.

It was a prepared statement from the priest announcing the arrest of a church volunteer.

"I feel betrayed in a way," admitted parishioner Daniel Chavez. "I hope this doesn't make all volunteers look bad."

Acting on a tip, this past Monday Scottsdale police set up surveillance on the church.

Investigators claim around 3 a.m. they saw 60-year-old David Johnson enter the building.

When confronted, police say Johnson admitted he had come to steal money.

"I believe humans are not perfect," said parishioner Miriam Ayale. "It's obviously not right to take something that's not yours."

The staff at the church believes as far back as January, Johnson would come in the wee hours of Monday morning and steal money from the previous day's collections.

"I'm upset about it," said parishioner Ann Anthony.

Administrators say Johnson volunteered as an usher which gave him access to the church's vault.

The church has yet to determine exactly how much money has gone missing.

"I would forgive him," said Bob Anthony.

Scottsdale police weren't as understanding, booking Johnson into jail on a charge of burglary.
