Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790, SNAPclohessy@aol.com)

When it comes to children’s safety, Sevilla has been among the most reckless bishops in the US. But complacency protects no one, so we urge Yakima citizens and Catholics to stay vigilant.

Pope Benedict has recently appointed compromised clerics with terribly disappointing histories of ignoring and concealing horrific child sex crimes. So we are skeptical that Bishop Tyson will be much better than Sevilla. We hope facts prove us wrong.

We hope Tyson will immediately take steps to warn Mexican families and officials about Fr. Aaron Ramirez and tell the full truth about allegations against Fr. Darren Mitchell.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 23 years and have more than 10,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)

Pope names new bishop for Yakima

The Associated Press

The Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI has named a Washington state native to be the new bishop of Yakima.

The brief announcement on Tuesday said the pontiff chose Monsignor Joseph J. Tyson, now serving as an auxiliary bishop of Seattle, for the Yakima post.

Tyson, 53, is a native of Moses Lake, Washington, who had served in several parishes in the Seattle archdiocese following his ordination in 1989.

He will take the place of retiring Yakima Bishop Carlos Sevilla.
