Children - Policy on safeguarding the young

The Archdiocese of Dublin has launched the Diocesan Policy for Child Safeguarding and Protecting Children.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has said there could be no room for complacency regarding the protection of children. He was speaking at a press conference this afternoon.

The procedures are designed to ensure that any priest in Dublin accused of abuse is treated fairly, but also to ensure that any potential risk to children is minimised, according to the Director of the Safeguarding and Child Protection Service, Andrew Fagan.

The launch also outlined increases in the number of allegations made against priests since the publication of the Murphy report in 2009.

Since then, there has been an increase of nine allegations made against priests of the Diocese, bringing the total number to 93.

Suspicions have been raised concerning 11 priests.
