THE LONG-AWAITED publication of the Cloyne report into clerical child sex abuse could be delayed further as lawyers disagree over interpretations of what parts of it can be published.

The Irish Times reports that it may now go back to the High Court where Justice Nicholas Kearns ruled earlier this month that most of the report could be published aside from chapter nine which relates to a priest whose trial is due to take place shortly.

This could now delay the publication until after 3 May when the courts sit again.

The report was expected to be published at the end of last week but council for the priest who will go on trial believe there are references apart from chapter 9 that would identify him.

However, counsel for the State is arguing that there are parts of chapter nine which could be published in line with the ruling.

The publication is now likely to be delayed until after Easter which may be welcomed by victims' support groups who worried the report's publication around Easter would mean that 24-hour helplines would not be sufficiently staffed to meet an expected increase in demand.
