The Tilak Nagar police on Thursday arrested a priest of a Chembur temple for allegedly molesting a married woman devotee by assuring that she will bear a child soon.

“Chandrashekhar Kadam alias Baba, 54, a priest at Dattatray temple, was booked under sections 354 (molestation) and 508 (acts caused by inducing a person to believe that he will become an object of divine displeasure) of the Indian Penal Code,” said police inspector Siddharth Kasabe of Tilak Nagar police station. He added that Kadam was released on bail of Rs5,000 by the holiday court on Saturday.

Kadam, who was hails from Dapoli in Ratnagiri district, came to Chembur 40 years ago and started working as a priest at Dattatray temple. He also used to guidethe devotees in their personal problems.

The molestation incident came to light on Thursday evening when 26-year-old beautician,Sangeeta Kawale (name changed to protect identity), came along with her husband, Rajesh Kawale, and mother-in-law, Radhika Kawale, to the temple.

After performing the pooja, while distributing the ‘prasad’ and ‘holy ashes’, Kadam took her in a corner and advised her to take the holy ashes mixed in water so that she will get a child. He threatened her saying “if she refused to take the ‘holy ashes’, God will punish her.”

He then forced her to take the holy ashes and dragged her close and pinched her chest. He also told her that he wanted to see her alone.

Fed up with his behaviour, Sangeeta went to the Tilak Nagar police station along with her husband and mother-in-law to lodge a complaint, added Kasabe.
