Pope Benedict XVI hailed Monday an Italian association that combats child abuse, encouraging it to continue raising awareness throughout the Roman Catholic Church.

Speaking at his Castel Gondolfo residence near Rome where he is resting after Easter week, the Pope noted that Italy was marking an annual day for child victims of violence, exploitation and neglect.

He singled out the Meter Association, set up 21 years ago by Catholic priest Fortunato Di Noto to combat child pornography and child sex abuse, urging the group to "continue their work to prevent abuse and raise awareness."

The Pope also cited Catholic "parishes, the patronages and the other sectors of the Church who devote themselves generously to training the new generations."

The Catholic Church has been rocked in recent years by a wave of pedophilia cases.
