Mexico plans grand celebrations for Sunday's beatification of John Paul II, who was known as "Mexico's pope," but critics say one of the church's most damaging scandals also took place here.

Victims of pedophile priests say the late pope turned a blind eye to abuse cases, particularly concerning Marcial Maciel.

Maciel, who founded the worldwide Legion of Christ in Mexico, was last year accused of having molested seminarians and fathering children, in a Vatican probe into long-standing allegations.

The former pope, who had enthusiastically supported Maciel, kept a "policy of covering up sexual abuse against women and minors by priests around the world," wrote Mexican activists in a statement published in the media Friday.

Despite the scandal, many media published nostalgic reminders of the former Polish pontiff and the five visits he made to Latin America's secondlargest Roman Catholic nation.
