CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- When people come to noon Mass on Sunday at the Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral in Charleston, they will find members of SNAP handing out fliers, asking people to protect children from sexual abuse.

SNAP stands for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. Members of this international network took part in worldwide informational events this weekend as the current Pope moved to have his predecessor honored in Rome.

Judy Jones is the Mid-Associate Director of SNAP. She said she joined the organization after she learned that members of her family suffered sexual abuse at the hands of priests. The network has chapters throughout the United States and in six other countries. The fliers are being distributed this weekend in 70 cities and seven countries.

Jones and other members of SNAP began this weekend handing out fliers to people who were attending church at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling.

The fliers read: "I will watch out for all children in my church as if they were my own, and I will immediately report known or suspected abuse to authorities, no matter when it occurred." More information is available at www.pledgetoprotectkids.org.

In a press release, members of SNAP called the Pope's decision to expedite the late Pope John Paul II's path to sainthood "a callous PR juggernaut honoring the man who presided over much of the on-going crisis." SNAP members believe the events in Rome only deepen "the suffering of so many."
