A parish priest, in the Tuam Archdiocese, has been asked to step aside from his ministry following an allegation dating back to the 1980s.

Archbishop Michael Neary spoke to the priest's parishioners at Mass last evening (Saturday) and said that he deeply regretted to inform them that an allegation, with regard to child safeguarding, has been made against their Parish Priest.

The allegation was reported immediately by the Diocese to the Gardaí and the HSE and the National Board for Safeguarding Children.

Archbishop Neary also said that the priest is entitled to the constitutional and natural right of every person to the presumption of innocence. He said his prayers are with all concerned at what he described as "this distressing time".
