Archbishop of Tuam Dr Michael Neary said the diocese was investigating a child safeguarding issue

A Catholic priest has been suspended from his ministry pending an investigation into an alleged "child safeguarding" issue.

The allegations against the priest, based in the Archdiocese of Tuam, date back to the 1980s.

"The allegation was reported immediately by the diocese to the gardaí and the HSE and the National Board for Safeguarding Children," Archbishop of Tuam Dr Michael Neary said in a statement.

"In accordance with Church safeguarding policy, Fr X will not be exercising ministry while the investigation is underway," he added.

Archbishop Neary said the diocese continues to work with the authorities to promote child safety, describing it as being of paramount importance.
