Roman Catholics in New York City are celebrating the beatification of Pope John Paul II, which moves him a step closer to sainthood.

Cardinal Edward Egan told worshipers at St. Patrick's Cathedral that John Paul "touched many, many souls."

The Polish-born John Paul died in 2005. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI early Sunday morning at the Vatican.

Jane Bracher of Carmel, Calif. said she and her husband met John Paul before they converted to Catholicism. They were formerly Episcopalians. She told the Daily News that meeting the pope was "a transforming event."

But survivors of sexual abuse said John Paul did not do enough to protect children who were abused by Catholic priests.

The group Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests handed out leaflets outside St. Patrick's.
