The Christian Brothers, the organization that runs Iona College and multiple high schools, recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy because of multiple lawsuits regarding sexual assault.

The Christian Brothers, the organization that runs Iona College and multiple high schools, recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy because of multiple lawsuits regarding sexual assault.

The order, which is based in New Rochelle, New York, has a history of lawsuits against it, and has run out of money to pay them, according to a report. Multiple suits against The Christian Brothers are still active in Seattle, Washington, and Canada.

The filing listed approximately $74 million in assets - most of it property, according to The Westchester Journal News.

Most of the lawsuits stem from child abuse claims from the 1940s to 1960s, as well as the 1990s, the news source added. They involve orphanages or boarding schools.

"These were very vulnerable children, who were removed from their parents or had no parents, and had no voice," Michael Pfau, a lawyer from Seatlle who has represented multiple victims of the order, told the news source. "They were preyed upon by the Christian Brothers."

A total of 10 cases involving Pfau are currently on hold because of the Chapter 11 filing, the news source added.
