NORTH WALES, Pa. - While many area Catholics celebrated the beatification of Pope John Paul II, local parishioners at Mary Mother of the Redeemer in North Wales were also offering words of support to their monsignor for speaking about the ongoing abuse crisis in the church.

Monsignor John Conway has said he unknowingly helped transfer a priest accused of sexual abuse, David Sicoli, who has been defrocked, to another parish where he was in contact with children, and has sent a letter to Cardinal Justin Rigali claiming that cover-up of abuse had taken place but denying he had any role in it.

The parishioners Shawnette Wilson spoke to Sunday said they respected Conway for his actions. The group Catholics for Change, which denounces clergy abuse, had members show up to the church Sunday as a show of support.

However, the members who did come said Conway had told them not to come because he did not want the publicity.
