Former Roman Catholic Bishop Raymond Lahey, 70, is facing the gavel today as his trial on child pornography charges opens. The charges stem found his arrest in September 2009 for possessing and importing child pornography.

Lahey was arrested at Ottawa airport by border agents when he returned from a visit to Britain. Border guards searched a laptop and allegedly found files that included young males performing sexual acts. The search had taken place because of his visiting Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Spain and Germany since 2005 reports the Ottawa Citizen.

At the time of the search Lahey admitted that the laptop was his and that he was attracted to 20 to 21 year old men.

Lahey plead guilty to the charge of importing child pornography Wednesday morning. The trial is expected to last three days.

After his arrest Lahey resigned from his position of Roman Catholic Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Antigonish in Nova Scotia.
