Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 862 7688 home, 314 503 0003 cell, SNAPdorris@gmail.com)

We applaud Canadian authorities for successfully pursuing criminal charges against Lahey. For far too long, law enforcement has given way too much deference to church officials. Those days, slowly, seem to be ending.

Unfortunately, now, because of Lahey's plea, no new information will surface about others in the diocese that may have seen or suspected Lahey's crimes. But we believe that other current and former church officials have likely ignored or concealed Lahey's misdeeds.

We hope that the Pope disciplines Lahey as quickly and severely as he did Morris (the Australian bishop who was recently ousted for talking about women ordination).

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world's oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We've been around for 23 years and have more than 10,000 members. Despite the word "priest" in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
