A former Canadian Roman Catholic bishop has pleaded guilty to charges of child pornography.

The bishop was arrested two years ago, just after he oversaw a multi-million dollar settlement for victims of sexual abuse committed within his own diocese.

His trial was supposed to last three days, but less than an hour after it began 70-year-old Raymond Lahey pleaded guilty to the possession of child pornography for the purposes of importation.

A second charge of distributing child porn was dropped after Lahey's lawyer said the material was intended for Lahey's own use.

The former bishop was charged in September of 2009 after he was arrested at the Ottawa airport while returning from a trip to Europe.

Border service agents found hundreds of pornographic photos and videos on his laptop computer. He resigned from the Antigonish diocese a day after he was charged.

The Vatican has also issued a statement condemning Lahey's actions and says it is considering disciplinary action against him.
