A former gym teacher at a Catholic high school was sentenced to 24 months of probation after pleading guilty today to sexually abusing one of his former students, officials said.

Wesley Cherniak, 33, of the 3800 block of North Bernard Street, pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse before Cook County Criminal Court Judge Mary Margaret Brosnahan, said Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County State's attorney's office.

As part of the conditions of the plea, Cherniak must undergo sexual offender probation and must register as a convicted sex offender, Conklin said.

Cherniak was a physical education teacher at St. Benedict's High School in the North Center neighborhood.

When Cherniak was charged last year, prosecutors said he and the victim who was 17 at the time met once a week between February and May 2009 at motels, his car and once in her bedroom, where he had sex with the teen.

In May 2009, the victim told her parents, and police were contacted. DNA evidence was taken from the victim's clothing, and was later matched to a sample taken from Cherniak, officials said. Authorities also obtained telephone and motel records linking Cherniak to the alleged crimes, prosecutors said last year.
