David Nelson

PHOENIX - A former church elder who pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual conduct with a minor will spend six months in jail, some 31 years after victimizing a 14-year-old boy.

The victim, now an adult, reported the abuse last year. He decided to come forward after talking to his wife and telling her what he went through.

In 1979, Nelson met the boy through the Madison Park Congregation Church and became a friend of his family.

Nelson was a Jehovah's Witness elder, a preacher and leader of the congregation.

In a recorded phone call last year, Nelson admitted to the sexual conduct with the victim and even apologized. He stated that it was all his fault and the victim was totally innocent.

Nelson has since retired from the church.

After serving his 6-month sentence, Nelson will be on probation for three years. Four other charges had been dismissed as part of 64-year-old David Clarke Nelson's plea deal.
