ANTIGONISH, N.S. — An effort is underway to keep the ownership of a small Nova Scotia community newspaper in local hands.

In March, the Diocese of Antigonish announced it was selling the church's controlling interest in the Casket Printing and Publishing Company, which publishes the Antigonish Casket newspaper.

The move was part of an effort to raise money for a class-action settlement with victims of sexual abuse.

Antigonish resident Mike MacDonald is spearheading an effort to see if there is enough community interest to purchase the church's shares.

MacDonald says people need to ask themselves what the Casket means to the identity of the community.

MacDonald says he fears a larger national or international company could purchase the controlling interest in the Casket.

He says he's in the process of organizing a meeting to gauge community interest.
