JONESBORO, Ill. (AP) - A former pastor who once guided fundraising efforts to restore southern Illinois' towering Bald Knob Cross of Peace has been found mentally fit to stand trial on sex charges involving a 4-year-old girl.

A Union County judge made that ruling based on competency tests done on 72-year-old Bill Vandergraph.

Vandergraph is charged with predatory sexual assault of a child under the age of 13 and criminal sexual abuse. Authorities contend the crimes took place between January and April of last year.

Vandergraph is free on bond and has pleaded not guilty. He's scheduled to stand trial starting June 27.

Prosecutor Tyler Edmonds says Vandergraph will continue undergoing psychiatric treatment during the trial to try to ensure he remains mentally fit.
