VATICAN CITY (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - The Vatican is coming under heavy criticism after releasing new directives about how to handle clergy sex abuse. The directive says bishops around the world should cooperate with police in reporting abuse, but does not make it mandatory.

This has survivors' groups furious.

In the US, guilty priests can be barred from public ministry or kicked out of the priesthood.

These guidelines were developed when the scandal was exposed in Boston in 2002.

The Vatican says it should have guidelines for preventing clergy sex abuse by next may.
