Open letter to Ms Catanzaro

Chair, Philadelphia Review Board

RESIGN NOW.

You need to do that because you have demonstrated that children will not be safe under your watch. After 8 years, your record is documented in two scathing grand jury reports and in the 37 questionable archdiocese of Philadelphia priests still in privileged positions over children.

Wow.

Your final advice: "The solution to the sexual-abuse scandal rests on being honest, acting promptly and transparently, being open to constructive criticism, and being committed to protecting minors" has the most important point last.

If you were committed to protecting children (not minors) you and your board would not have been faulted by the grand jurors.

You provided public relations cover for those indifferent to safeguarding our children. How many times have I read, "We now have an independent review board."?

You allowed yourself to be entangled in word games with canon lawyers. Their actions demonstrate little interest in "determining the suitability of a priest for ministry" which you concede was your instruction.

You rationalize the failures of your board. You imply that "the canonists wouldn't let me do it?" The board positions need grownups and that kind of thinking should be left in grammar school. You were unable to recognize a con game when you saw one.

You were misled, deceived, or lied to by the Cardinals. When Jim Jenkins realized he was being used in San Francisco by Cardinal Levada in the same way he resigned and publicly denounced the review board flim flam game.

Resignation and public denunciation of these clergy deceptions are two ways to recover some level of integrity.

You could also consider becoming an advocate for justice for the abused to make up for being used as a smokescreen for the disingenuous policies and actions of the hierarchy.
