The appointment of Rev. R. Daniel Conlon was announced Tuesday. He's currently the bishop of the Diocese of Steubenville, Ohio, and will be installed as Joliet bishop on July 14. He succeeds previous Bishop J. Peter Sartain.

Conlon's appointment was criticized by the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, known as SNAP, over his handling of sexual abuse allegations in his Ohio diocese.

Among the group's complaints is that he's never responded to letters delivered to him in 2006 from people claiming they were sexually abused by priests in the Steubenville diocese.

The Steubenville and Joliet dioceses declined to comment and a U.S. spokesman for the Vatican said he could not comment.
