A victim support group believes new Vatican guidelines aimed at fighting child abuse by priests do not go far enough.

The Vatican this week gave bishops around the globe a year to come up with national guidelines on how to combat the sexual abuse of children.

Some saw the move as an effort by the church to clamp down on paedophiles in their ranks, while others were sceptical of any recommendation that included bishops drawing up an international strategy.

Bernard Barrett, a spokesman for the Broken Rites Australia victim support group, said Catholic bishops had too often ignored and concealed sex-abuse crimes.

''Concealing a crime is itself a criminal offence. Will the Vatican sack these silent bishops and report them to the civil police?'' he said.

The Vatican has said that the move is part of a push to standardise the church's response to abuse allegations.
