District and sessions judge Manjit Singh on Thursday acquitted a priest of the charges of raping a 55-year-old woman inside the dharamshala of Mansa Devi Temple in Panchkula in August 2009.

As the prosecution failed to produce evidence against the accused, the court acquitted Sanjay. Sources said the woman changed her statement thrice. Her statements in the complaint to police, in front of inquiry officer and in court were different, which helped in the acquittal.

Panchkula police had registered a rape case against Sanjay at the Mansa Devi Police Station on August 25, 2009, on the woman's complaint.

The victim had informed the police that a case related to her property was pending in HC. One of her relatives told her that Sanjay, who he knew, would help her in this matter as Sanjay 'had good connections' in the court. She reportedly met the priest on August 21, 2009. She had come to Panchkula along with her 16-year-old daughter. The cops added Sanjay booked a room in the dharamshala of Mata Mansa Devi Temple for the woman and her daughter.
