A man claiming to be a preacher from Texas was arrested after allegedly raping a woman near Sissonville, deputies say.

Kanawha Sheriff's deputies arrested Matthew D. Jarrell, 41, of Terrell, Texas, Thursday morning after a 36-year-old woman told authorities he sexually assaulted her, Lt. Sean Crosier said in a press release.

The woman told deputies Jarrell picked her up in a Charleston bar early Thursday morning and offered her a ride home. Instead, he drove her to a secluded area in Sissonville where he forced her to perform sexual acts.

She was able to flee and call for help after Jarrell's truck got stuck in the mud. Deputies caught up to Jarrell near the site.

Crosier said Jarrell had been claiming to be a preacher from a church in Texas. Deputies investigating the incident found that he has similar charges pending in San Antonio. Jarrell's family members told authorities he was supposed to be in Pennsylvania.

Jarrell has been charged with sexual assault and is being held at South Central Regional Jail on $75,000 bond.
