Expelled ... Bill Carney

A PAEDOPHILE priest described as "a serial sex abuser of children" has been found living on an estate overlooking a kids' play area.

Bill Carney, 61, was expelled from the Catholic Church after being named in the Murphy Report into clerical abuse in Ireland.

Fears ... playground

He was suspected of abusing up to 32 kids, with investigators sure there were more.

Ex-alcoholic Carney fled Ireland for Scotland and Lanzarote before moving to Northleach, Gloucs, with wife Joan.

Now local parents say they are afraid to let their children use the playground as his back gate leads straight on to it. One mum said: "A lot of people aren't happy, but it seems nothing can be done.

"It's frightening to know that a man like this can just move in - and that's it."

Carney was convicted of two counts of indecent assault in 1983 and defrocked in 1992 after church authorities found him guilty of child sex abuse.

The 2009 Murphy Report singled him out as one of the Church's worst paedophiles. Carney's presence in Northleach was discussed by the Town Council on Wednesday.

They were told he is understood not to be on the Sex Offenders Register used by UK police as his convictions took place in Ireland too long ago. Chairman Neil Fletcher vowed to contact police over the concerns. Carney declined to comment.
