Statement by Barbara Blaine of Chicago, president of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (312-399-4747, SNAPblaine@gmail.com)

Last week, we learned that Kansas City Bishop Robert Finn kept evidence of child pornography hidden for five months – from police, parishioners, and the public.

Today, we learn (through the National Catholic Reporter) that Finn also kept this crucial information from his hand-picked internal church sex abuse panel, just as Philadelphia Cardinal Justin Rigali did months ago.

Let us remember that Finn didn't just have access to child pornography, he also essentially had a confession from the sex offender priest, who wrote and "apologized to the kids." Still, he did little. He should be ashamed.

Blase Cupich, the bishop of Spokane, heads the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' sex abuse committee. Last week, he claimed that the stunning Philadelphia abuse and cover up scandal was "an anomaly." It looks like his rosy assumption was wrong.
