A new bishop has been named for the Catholic Diocese of Rapid City.

Pope Benedict XVI has name the Rev. Msgr. Robert Gruss to the post. The 55-year-old Gruss is pastor of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport, Iowa.

Gruss will replace Blase Cupich, who became bishop of the Diocese of Spokane last fall after 12 years in Rapid City.

Gruss will be the ninth bishop of the Rapid City Diocese, which serves more than 30,000 Catholics and 82 congregations in western South Dakota. Gruss says he's a bit overwhelmed but grateful for the opportunity.
