A parish priest from Luthern, in the canton of Lucerne, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for embezzling funds from parishioners.

The German-born parish priest stole over half a million francs from church goers between 1997 and 2003.

He used the money to renovate his apartment, buy a new car and pay for booze to feed his alcohol addiction problem.

At a hearing, the priest pleaded guilty to the embezzelemnt charges but said he was not able to remember what had happened during the six-year period.

He since succesfully completed an alcoholism rehabiltation programme.

His misuse of church goers' donations was only discovered when he resigned from his position.

The priest is currently receiving psychiatric treatment
