Catholic priest Renato Kizito, in the back of a police car at Kilimani Police station on May 26, 2011, where he recorded a statement on a sexual molestation complaint. He was freed on Friday.

Mr Disterious Ratemo, a secretary with the Koinonia Old Beneficiaries Welfare Association, was attacked at around midnight.

Mr Ratemo is one of the beneficiaries of Fr Kizito's philanthropy, and openly defended him last week when the priest was arrested over sexual abuse claims.

He said he was heading home after watching a Champions League match between Manchester United and Barcelona when he was attacked.

"A motorbike dropped me at the gate from my office at Kivuli Centre where I had been watching the match," he told the Nation.

Speaking from Coptic Hospital in Nairobi where he had sought treatment, Mr Ratemo said six hooded men approached him as he was selecting the right key to open his gate and attacked him with metal bars.

He said they took off with his identification documents and wallet. "I believe these people knew me, and knew that I usually come home at this time. Normally, there aren't any incidents of robbery here," he said.

Mr Ratemo claimed the attack was linked to his defence of Fr Kizito, who has twice been accused of sexual abuse.

On Friday, the Catholic priest was released after investigators said medical tests had failed to link him to sexual abuse accusations.
