The Diocese of St. Petersburg disclosed it has spent $4.7 million to settle sex abuse cases since 1990.

The announcement came in an accountability letter issued by Bishop Robert N. Lynch over the weekend to area Catholics. The letter also was made public on the diocese's website.

In the letter, Lynch stated the diocese has spent $1.7 million for settlements, $273,000 "for counseling assistance to those who have been harmed as minors," and $123,000 in legal fees over the past five years.

An estimated 20 percent of the total cost was covered by insurance and the rest was covered by the diocese's insurance reserves. The diocese has not asked for special funds from parishioners to cover the costs, Lynch wrote.
