A Church of England Vicar has been arrested following an allegation of an historic child sex attack in Slough.

The Rev Chris Hanson was arrested at his home in Broadgate Road, East London, on suspicion of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

The 63-year-old worked in Langley between 1997 and 2008 when the attack is alleged to have happened.

He was arrested on May 23 by Scotland Yard detectives working on behalf of Thames Valley Police after an investigation was launched earlier this year.

Hanson worked as a team vicar in Langley Marish Benefice covering St Mary the Virgin, St Mary's Road, Christ the Worker, Parlaunt Road and St Francis, Castle View Estate before moving as vicar of Ascension Church in London.

The Bishop of Chelmsford has suspended Hanson from all his duties within the Church of England and as vicar of Victoria Docks church.

A Chelmsford Diocese statement said: "This suspension is without prejudice. The Church of England follows established policies and procedures and training programmes in child protection.

"We are holding all those who may be affected by the situation in our prayers and are providing pastoral care to Rev Hanson and the parish."

He has been released on bail until June 29.
