Some Catholics on Friday asked the leader of the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese to resign for not responding to warnings about a priest now accused of possessing child pornography.

Bishop Robert Finn met for more than two hours with St. Thomas More parishioners in south Kansas City. Many who attended said afterward that Finn could no longer lead them.

“I question whether he can be an effective leader because he violated the trust of the people,” said Gina Staves of south Kansas City.

Finn, who also had supporters in the closed meeting, declined to comment as he left the church. Parishioners said Finn asked them to forgive and pray for him.

Finn has come under criticism after a priest was charged last month with possessing child pornography.

Last week, Finn acknowledged that he did not heed warnings about the Rev. Shawn F. Ratigan’s past behavior and expressed regret about the handling of the case.

On Thursday night, the diocese announced that Finn has removed another priest from his duties because of “credible reports” of sexual misconduct with minors.
