Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has spoken for the first time of how he believes a garda saved him from being assaulted when he was a boy.

The comments were made by the Archbishop of Dublin after he was asked if he had ever been abused.

He spoke in an interview with Maureen Dowd of the 'New York Times' of being "pinned up against the wall" by a man in the middle of a street.

Ms Dowd interviewed Dr Martin at his office in Drumcondra, Dublin, during her visit last month when she was writing on the visit of US President Barack Obama to Ireland.

Dr Martin said that when he was growing up, his mother always told him to "go serve your Mass but don't hang around with the priest".

"I must have been about 12. This dirty old man came up and said the most horrendous things to me in the street, and he had me sort of pinned against the wall," Dr Martin told Ms Dowd.

"I was getting very upset, and I saw a policeman coming, and I called the policeman and the man ran away," he added.
