Rev. John F. Regan, 47, the former pastor of St. Walter Parish in Roselle, is expected to admit to stealing more than $300,000 of church funds.

At a court hearing today, Regan’s attorney, John Donahue, told a DuPage judge that Regan is expected to plead guilty to theft on Thursday.

Regan was indicted in February 2009 by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

He’s being accused of stealing the funds from between August 2006 and July 2008, according to a press release from the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Regan allegedly accepted cash and checks written by St. Walter’s parishioners and deposited the money into a bank account he opened without the knowledge of church officials. His name was the only one on the account.

Joliet Diocese officials have said Regan appeared to have a gambling addiction and records show money was withdrawn from riverboat casinos.

Regan faces nine counts of theft over $100,000 from a place of worship, one count of continuing financial crimes, seven counts of theft and four counts of money laundering.

Regan could be sentenced up to 15 years in prison for the theft charge.
