DETROIT (AP) — The leader of the Archdiocese of Detroit has warned Roman Catholic priests that they could be defrocked if they participate in Mass at a convention center as part of a weekend gathering that's sponsored by organization of Catholic reform groups.

The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News report that Archbishop Allen Vigneron (VIG'-neh-ron) of Detroit wrote a letter urging Catholics, especially priests, to stay away from the Friday to Sunday conference sponsored by the American Catholic Council.

Vigneron says Sunday's Mass at downtown Detroit's Cobo Center may violate church teachings.

Council organizers said they will not violate church policies. Co-organizer John Hushon says the council wants to engage Catholics about the church's problems.

The archdiocese is supporting a more conservative conference scheduled for Saturday in the suburb of Livonia.
