KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Catholic Church is not the only religious community that has been forced to deal with allegations of child abuse. However, recent church history should have made Kansas City Bishop Robert Finn more attentive to allegations about priests.

A diocesan priest, accused of possessing child pornography, has been jailed. A year ago, a Catholic school principal warned in writing about the priest's behavior. When images of children were discovered on the accused priest's computer, the diocese described one of them to police, but failed to immediately turn them over and ask police to investigate.

Finn has apologized publicly for failing to heed the warnings, and has asked former U.S. attorney Todd Graves to conduct an investigation. But his disappointing failure to respond more quickly put at risk the most vulnerable in the church.

Bishops of the Catholic Church are granted significant authority. With that comes a higher level of accountability.
