The Rev. Robert Wurm, a controversial priest from Ferndale, is saying he did nothing wrong when conducting a liberal Mass in Detroit, which was not condoned by the Archdiocese of Detroit.

June 14, The Detroit Free Press: "Despite stern warnings to clergy from Archbishop of Detroit Allen Vigneron to not attend, up to 50 Catholic priests from metro Detroit attended the Mass, said Wurm and two organizers.

"But Wurm said Monday he "didn't do anything wrong" and was honoring Catholic teachings by reaching out to people."

The newspaper reports 1,500 people from across the world attended the Mass that was held at the end of a three-day gathering of liberal Catholics.

Before the three-day event at Cobo Center last week, Vigneron posted a letter on the dioceses' website to all of his "dear brother priests and deacons" warning of Wurm and the American Catholic Council, a Florida not-for-profit corporation.

Vigneron wrote: "I have a number of concerns about this event and caution any Catholic against participating for reasons expressed already in previous communications sent by the Archdiocese."

Vigneron later warned Roman Catholic priests that they could be defrocked if they participated in Sunday's Mass , saying the service during the conference sponsored by the American Catholic Council may violate church teachings.

The Archdiocese of Detroit Sunday said it plans a review after a Mass as part of a weekend gathering that was sponsored by organization of Catholic reform groups.

Wurm, 78, told The Free Press, "the Catholic Church has great theory ... and fantastic resources … But its practice" in reaching out is lacking.
