The Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said he wants to establish the full extent of the State's involvement with the Magdalene Launderies.

Last night, the Government announced it is setting up an investigation into the State's role in the workhouses.

But it stopped short of making an apology to the women who suffered while working there.

The Justice Minister is hoping for full co-operation from the religious orders when he meets with them.

Mr Shatter said: "We will be meeting with the religious congregations and the groups advocating on behalf of the survivors of the laundries and looking to put in place a restorative and reconciliation process.

"We will also be seeking to ensure that all of the records that are held by the congregations in relation to the laundries are accessible and available."
