Revisions to USCCB Charter on the Protection of Children and Young People

The National Survivor Advocates Coalition (NSAC) did not expect the United States Conference of Bishops to make the strong changes needed to the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People to actually protect children, root out predators and bring to justice those who covered up the scandal but we are appalled at the fraud that the bishops are seeking to perpetrate by touting the inclusion of themselves within even the weak tenets of the Charter.

We urge Catholics not to be taken in by this deceptive gesture that the bishops are in any way holding themselves accountable in this continuing scandal.

The inclusion of language that says that if a bishop is accused of sexual abuse he should inform the Apostolic Nuncio or a fellow bishop who has knowledge of it should do so is nothing short of laughable as a real response to what the bishops have done and covered up in this scandal. We need only point to Philadelphia and Kansas City as the most recent examples.

These are powerful men with plenty of resources who have tip top educations from the best Catholic schools in the country – and outside the country – all paid for by Catholics money.

They know what they are doing. And once again they are slipping out of responsibility by intentionally creating and walking through a gigantic loophole – and doing it while calling upon the name of God – full well knowing that innocents continue to suffer.

It takes gall.
