Attorneys representing Toledo priest Gerald Robinson have asked for an extension of Friday’s deadline to file a motion seeking to have the cleric’s murder conviction overturned.

Rick Kerger said he asked Judge Gene Zmuda of Lucas County Common Pleas Court to delay the deadline until July 8 because he has been unable to schedule a meeting with a key witness.

Robinson’s amended petition for post-conviction relief contends the priest’s constitutional rights were violated in the 2006 trial in which he was convicted of murdering Sister Margaret Ann Pahl in 1980.

Defense attorneys pursued this petition after the conviction was upheld in the Ohio 6th District Court of Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court.

Robinson, 73, is serving a 15-years-to-life sentence at a prison in southern Ohio.
