PORTLAND, Maine -- Maine's Catholic bishop is downsizing.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland said Bishop Richard Malone is going from a 16-room mansion in one of Portland's most upscale neighborhoods to a three-bedroom home in a suburban subdivision.

Diocese spokeswoman Sue Bernard said the move is a way to save money on heating, maintenance and property taxes.

The diocese is going to sell the 16-room mansion, which was built in 1900. The diocese hasn't decided on a selling price, but the city last assessed the building at $925,000.
