A former priest in the Edmundston area will serve out his sentence in Canada before authorities review whether to deport him back to the Congo.

Rev. Joseph Numbi Phaku Mavambu was sentenced in Edmundston Provincial Court last week to two years in federal prison and two years of probation after pleading guilty in the spring to one charge of touching a minor for a sexual purpose.

"After that, immigration will take over the file when he is released. He'll have to finish his probation, and then they will look at it," Const. said Julie Ryan, the RCMP officer who investigated the case, speaking in French. "They will review his file to determine whether he will be expelled from Canada to his home country."

Mavambu, who is a citizen of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, last served as the priest for Roman Catholic parishes in Riviere-Verte and Sainte-Anne de Madawaska. He was suspended from his duties amid the allegations last year. Mavambu entered a guilty plea in April. The Crown dropped two other charges against Mavambu - one of sexual invitation of a minor and another of sexual assault.
