Vatican concerns about discipline within the Brazilian clergy were a motive for the trip to that country by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006, according to a Vatican Insider report.

Citing Wikileaks documents from the US State Department, the report notes that Vatican officials had major concerns about breaches of celibacy among Brazilian priests. There were also worries about the continued influence of liberation theology.

Tensions between the Vatican and Brazil have remained, the report says, coming to a head in 2009 when the then-president of the Pontifical Academy for Life publicly scolded Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho of Recife for pronouncing the excommunication of those responsible for an abortion involving a young rape victim.
