Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has today warned that further budget cuts will have to be made if religious orders do not pay half the cost of compensation to suffers of child abuse.

Minister Quinn says he hopes that the €670m made by religious orders in property deals over the past decade can be used to pay for compensation.

The figures were revealed as part of an investigation carried out by the Irish Examiner newspaper today.

The Government is to re-open discussions with the clergy shortly in a bid to get the church to pay 50% of the cost of compensation to the victims of clerical sexual abuse.

"I'm going to enter into these negotiations with an open mind," said Minister Quinn.

"This is about recouping for the distressed Irish taxpayer a vast amount of money, the alternative which is that we have to reduce further expenditure and introduce saving in areas that we would otherwise not want to do."
