The jury trial in Sullivan County Criminal Court of former Roman Catholic priest William "Bill" Casey opened this morning, with his accuser taking the stand after the jury received instructions from Judge Robert H. Montgomery Jr.

Sullivan County District Attorney General Barry Staubus, in his opening presentment to the jury, detailed charges against Casey.

After each count, Casey clearly and loudly said "Not Guilty" as he looked at the jury of seven men and five women.

In opening statements, the prosecutor characterized Casey as "a priest whose own perverse obsession crossed all moral sexual boundaries."

Casey, 77, is charged with two counts of aggravated rape and one count of first-degree sexual misconduct.

The crimes with which he is charged allegedly occurred more than 30 years ago. Casey is a former pastor of Notre Dame Catholic Church in Greeneville and lives in the Camp Creek community.
